Researchers at the Cambridge Graphene Centre at the University of Cambridge and scientists at Jiangnan University, China, are developing more environmentally-friendly conductive textiles using graphene-based inks on cotton. The researchers created inks of chemically modified graphene flakes that are more adhesive to cotton fibers, similar to the way cotton holds colored dye. Most of the current wearable technologies rely on rigid electronic components mounted on flexible materials such as plastic films or textiles. This new method for producing conductive cotton fabrics opens up new possibilities for flexible and wearable electronics that are more comfortable, less expensive and more sustainable.
