Environmental rules for sealants

ASTM International will partner with the Adhesive and Sealant Council (ASC) to develop Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) for sealants and engage the industry in developing Product Category Rules (PCR). “Groups like the United States Green Building Council [are] inserting EPD requirements within its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program, for example,” says Matthew E. Croson, president of ASC. “We want to make sure industry is represented during meetings discussing any PCR that touches the sealant industry.” A Type III EPD verifies the environmental attributes of the product for the ultimate user. The first step in developing a TYPE III EPD is formulating PCR, followed by a Life Cycle Assessment of the product, so the partnership is focused on education about and participation in the PCR process.
