To help improve visibility and safety for an aging U.S. population, street signs must now incorporate letters at least 6 inches tall, compared to the previous standard of 4 inches. According to the Federal Highway Administration, all local governments must purchase new street signs that comply with the updated standards, which can be reviewed in the Manual Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
