FABTECH unveils Southern Hemisphere’s largest floating cover

Published On: February 2, 2023

Fabtech recently unveiled the Southern Hemisphere’s largest floating cover as stage 1 works at Sydney Water’s Potts Hill Reservoirs in New South Wales, Australia nears completion.

FABTECH was awarded the contract to supply, design and install the new liner and cover. To continue to provide drinking water to its residents, Sydney Water required the inner liners and floating roofs of the two reservoirs to be replaced in two phases. This meant working adjacent to an operational storage facility and designing the construction plan to achieve this safely and efficiently. The reservoirs have a combined surface area of 180,000sq.m―requiring over 500,000sq.m of specialist materials supplied by FABTECH’s partners Layfield Group and Haogenplast LTD.

“We built the original liner and cover at Potts Hill in 1999 and have been supporting Sydney Water since then,” said FABTECH managing director Graham Fairhead. “This project allows FABTECH to draw on its 30 years of experience in designing and constructing floating cover systems and materials engineering to build a world-class asset for Sydney Water. It’s exciting and a privilege to work with Sydney Water and their delivery partner Delivering 4 Customers (D4C).”

FABTECH also thanked Sydney Water and D4C for the assistance provided and acknowledged the efforts of its team on the ground including project manager Jashwin Bhalla, construction manager Mark Bennett, project engineer Sai Saketh, site supervisor Dean Warner and the crew that have worked tirelessly to make the design work a reality.
