A. Hoffman Awning Co., Baltimore, Md., won first place and Best of Show at the 2015 Maryland Home & Garden Show held in March in Timonium.

Highlighting the company’s booth, designed by Joe Grimm and Ben Youngs, was a facade of applied vinyl depicting a house complete with awnings. The backdrop dimensions were 20 feet wide by 10 feet high, and the freestanding facade was constructed using more than 150 feet of 1-by-2-inch steel framework fabricated by the company’s welders.

The background was created using Adobe Photoshop® software before being digitally printed onto 8-ounce vinyl from Ultraflex Systems Inc. This was then attached to the framework. A small window awning, a larger stationary patio awning and two working retractables were then mounted to it. Challenges included designing a narrow, yet freestanding frame that was sturdy and safe; transporting and installing the large framework at the venue; and creating a backdrop in Photoshop that had the correct scale.
