The demand for large-tow carbon fiber, used for applications such as wind turbine blades and reinforced plastic compounds, is growing, and Toray Industries, Tokyo, Japan, wanted a presence in the market. Toray, with strengths in organic synthetic chemistry, polymer chemistry and biotechnology in textiles and plastics, will acquire Zoltek, a St. Louis, Mo., company that manufactures high-strength, high-purity and heat-resistant carbon fibers. The merger, which will cost an estimated $584 million, is expected to be completed in late 2013 or early 2014.
