Published On: September 21, 2012

For professionals responsible for product evaluation, specifications and quality control for apparel and textile materials, the Introduction to Textile Testing Workshop will be held Dec. 5-6 at the AATCC headquarters in Research Triangle Park, N.C., U.S.A.

AATCC procedures for evaluating colorfastness and physical properties will be discussed and demonstrated by AATCC staff. Colorfastness tests to be addressed include crocking, light, washing and perspiration. Tests for evaluating physical properties include dimensional change (home laundering and accelerated methods), water repellency and resistance, and appearance retention. Emphasis will be placed on how to properly conduct and interpret the tests, with registrants being involved in hands-on participation.

Sessions will be conducted on basic color theory and measurement as well as fiber identification. Participants will be shown how to use the AATCC Gray Scales for Staining and Color Change, the AATCC Chromatic Transference Scale, and Xenon Reference Fabric.

ASTM methods D 4966 Abrasion Resistance of Textile Fabrics (Martindale Abrasion Tester Method); D 5034 Breaking Strength and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Grab Test); D 5035 Breaking Force and Elongation of Textile Fabrics (Strip Method); and D 1424 Tearing Strength of Fabrics by Falling-Pendulum (Elmendorf-Type) Apparatus will also be discussed and demonstrated.
